Orkiestra Rozrywkowa PR i TV W Poznaniu - Dyskoteka 4 (1977)

     now this was a long time coming. i've been a huge fan of Zbigniew Gorny since i first discovered him back when i was getting into library music. this is one of the few recordings i've never heard from him. finally one popped up online for purchase and i knew i had to get it. it's the PRiTV guys at their best! Gorny tracks are always amazing, 'Bliżej Siebie' and 'Fontanna' being the two best. tons of funky disco all over this thing. 'Senny Koszmar' might be my favourite of the tape. and the funkiness of  'Pokusa' gets you right away. you may recognize some of these from library releases, as some songs were later issued on Standard Music Library and Apollo Sound. i hope you enjoy this rare piece of polish funky disco history! 

kpm - International Business 2 (1981)

      despite releasing the same year as the first volume, most of this one feels much more 80s, including the packaging and their updated logo. can't say i've listened to much kpm that wasn't a green cover. the a-side starts a little more gloomy, with a bit of breezy in there. flip it over and we start getting some great stuff. 'Transport International (b)' is awesome, fits on the first volume better. the other standout is the funky stomping track 'Transport International (e)'. first heard this track in some mid-80s garbage video porno. certainly not as good as the first volume, but a worthy entry in the kpm library.

Selected Sound - Follow Me (1977)

      well i remember buying this one for a specific song, the best version of 'Stern Von Afrika'. don't recall the rest of the record being that great, and i must say the a-side was still a disappointment haha. the flip side is a little better, 'Island Of My Dreams' is quite good, and 'Holiday Hopp' is okay. overall just not my type of sound. definitely not something i need to own anymore.

Summer Job (1989) Soundtrack

 

     when i first popped Summer Job into my vcr many years ago, i wasn't expecting much. well, i was blown away. fantastic sex comedy and a great soundtrack to match! oddly this soundtrack was only released on vinyl in Canada, and i've been waiting for one to pop up cheap. well that never happened so i just got the cassette. the sleeve mentions a cd but i've never seen it. some great tracks throughout, including the catchy theme. but the real standout is the Orkestra stuff. they also preform in the film. i'd never heard them before, had to go out and get their stuff. enjoy!

Les Délices Du Tossing (1983)

     threw this one on a couple days ago. right away i was taken aback by the great theme song, and by the fact that it's a french film but the song is sung in german. super catchy disco track. the man suppling the music for the film is Raymond Bacharach, and he does a heck of a job. some great disco, funk and rock tracks on here. was too good not to go out an compile the soundtrack. enjoy!

The Flakes - Straight Jacket 7" (2004)

in honour of my favourite website, here's a 7" release from The Flakes // Drummer. kbdrecords was the site that influenced me back in high school to make my own site and talk about/rip my own records. sadly the site is gone now, at least you can still see it on the wayback machine. when Peter posted this on the site, only the first track was available, and everyone said it wasn't for them. me being 15 at the time i went along with that, even though i loved it. i secretly liked it the whole time and wish i had the courage back them to say it. anyway i'm saying it now, what a great record! never heard the b-side until i bought it, and was delightfully surprised how good it was. just some great driving power pop! rip kbd!

Sonoton - Disco (1980)

     always forget about Quango & Sparky, can't really say i've listened to that many Sonotons really. i do like Narholz and Fiddy a lot though. this is great, just a bunch of disco as the title suggests. favourite track is definitely 'Never Say Forever', which brings back memories of Seka for Christmas. 'Gogo West' and 'San Fran Jubilee' are really good too. a couple clunkers, the rock ones, but overall it's a winner.

Selected Sound - Match-Ball (1981)

     might be my favourite library record, this thing is amazing. the polish library stuff is always my favourite. Zbigniew Gorny and his orchestra really killed it. it's hard to imagine a more perfect song then 'Magma'. that minute long buildup intro, then dropping the funkiest damn thing i've ever heard. not far behind is the title track, then 'Oversea Flights', 'Newport' and 'Net Service'. all of them funky disco dreams. i bought this thing in 2014 for 6 euros, what bang for your buck, and it still looks to be as affordable as then. bury me with this record.

Bruton Music - Disco Happening (1978)

     after shovelling snow all day in this terrible weather, it's time to relax with a record. looked at the shelf and thought oh yeah this is a great one, gotta play this. always liked stuff from the Bruton library, and this one was solid enough throughout for me to buy. a lot of library records feel disjointed with differing styles, but this one flows very nicely. a classic porno record, always hearing stuff from this. funky disco all over. it's hard to pick a favourite, 'Disco Partners', 'Disco Stepping', 'Itchy Funk' and 'Soul Stomp' are all so good!

Music for Dancefloors: The KPM Music Library (2013)

     just pulling some records off the shelf. first it's a 2-LP compilation of kpm, Themes and others. i got this for christmas at the time mostly for 'Funky Express' as i couldn't afford the original kpm record. i think it's a good collection of tracks but half of it isn't really my taste. starts off strong with three great tracks. 'That's What Friends Are For (vocal version)', then possibly my favourite in 'Unlimited Love', and then 'Funky Express'. i wish there there were a couple other disco tracks on here but it's really just the one.

      the real clunkers on here for me are the latin and reggae tracks. and outside of 'Crash Course' the whole d-side is a pass for me. 

     i completely forgot that this thing comes with CDs too. the one disc is live versions from a jazz club. while it was fun to listen to once i doubt i'd ever listen to those again.

The Best Of Celeste Records

 

     popped into a used store the other week looking for some Deep Space Nine books, and came across some quality records. i haven't ripped any doo wop in about ten years, but this comp got me to whip out the sound card. was most excited to check out the vocal only trail session that resides on the b-side of this. instantly fell in love with Sweet Lorraine. was excited to flip it over and hear the version with the band, but it just doesn't deliver like the acappella version. some others on that b-side, Lucky Guy and I Call To You, are also great uptempo vocal only cuts. good stuff!

Scuba in the Buff (1991)

     christmas time again! been on the hunt for Scuba in the Buff ever since i saw a preview for it at the beginning of another similar style tape. finally got the tape not too long ago and it did not disappoint! i was surprised to hear a bunch of library music, but i guess i shouldn't have been. i chopped up the tracks and threw them up on youtube to see if they recognized em, and they did.

     late 80s library is not my forte, so i'd never heard these tunes before. the soundtrack all comes from the De Wolfe library. three different records, '86, '87, and '88 releases. upbeat in-your-face, and laid back tunes. had to upload the video to get it out there too. tasteful nudity included of course so click at your own risk. happy holidays, enjoy!

Rodney Franklin - Diamond Inside Of You (1988)

     at this point i'm almost taking over the cover with this massive reflection. interesting little album here, big mix of new jack beats, soul, pop, really anything you name it. the record starts out with a jazzy instrumental tune with a new jack beat, Malibu Shuffle. followed closely by is Gotta Give It Up, a nice little uptempo poppy track. flip over the record and you get a nice soulful instrumental tune Shasta Wind. next track is another jazzy bit with a new jack swang, Woogie. lots to like in this one. laid back record, perfect for a late night groove. 

Louise Freeman - Listen To My Heart (1991)

     took a little flier on this one last week. cover and year led to to believe there'd be something for me, was not disappointed. decent record throughout, okay funky stuff with soul-ish mixed in. When Push Comes To Shove starts off the record in a funky style. flip it over and you get a seldom heard new jack tune, Back In Stride. the best two tracks start off their respective sides. was glad to get that new jack, can never get enough of it!

Donna McElroy - Bigger World (1990)

 

     reflection again says hey. was pretty excited to come across this one. released on the warner bros gospel label, one of only two releases apparently. this copy is from reprise though. the album starts out with some funky and soul stuff on the a-side, but it's the flip side where things get good. second track on that side is Take It Away, some decent gospel new jack. another great one sits at the very end of the record. Can't Stand Still starts with a little rap and goes into that smooth gospel new jack. nice little surprise of a record, you know what's in store.

Prince Phillip Mitchell - Loner (1991)

     hey from the reflection again. local record store had a big ol' stack of these, took a flier on it. last solo record from mitchell, and it's just an okay record. all soul throughout, with some of the tunes leaning on that funkier side. decent tracks all over it, but While The Cat's Away is easily the top choice. a funky soul tune that i found myself playing over and over all night, quite catchy. nothing more to say, just some laid back grooves.

Whispers - Love For Love (1983)

     this was a nice surprise way back in the day. the first tune Tonight is a massive boogie tune, but as soon as i heard it i knew something was fishy. instantly knew it was very similar to a jerry knight song. so i went and played that 1982 record and at the end, Do It All For You starts playing and i went there it is! went back to the whispers record to see who stole the song, and hey there was jerry's name as songwriter. if i compare the two, i actually prefer the whispers version. this version is much slower but it's so fat compared to jerry's version, both great though. the record wastes no time here, and the second tune is another sludgy boogie stomper, Keep On Lovin' Me. the rest of the record is some soul and bits of more boogie, but it doesn't live up to these two first songs. bar was set too high!

MerriWeather - Body Like That (1988)

     barely a hey from the reflection. was flipping through crates in a record store and spotted this one. had a close look and it seemed decent, but i left it behind. when i got home to check and see what i was missing, i couldn't find much, and the one snippet i found was pretty lame, Dog Eat Dog. the thing that struck me was it being listed as new jack, i figured there must be at least one good tune. went back into the store a few days later and picked it up. i couldn't wait to see what was going on. well the a-side wasn't doing it for me. flip it over and still nothing. i get to the second last track and finally a winner. was hoping for at least one good tune, and i got one and one only, Not Tired Yet. not the greatest new jack, but fun for sure with some great horn work. still kinda early for the genre, so it's no surprise the rest of the album is a snoozer.
